With Lil Wayne's summer blockbuster of an album, the South cemented its status as hip-hop's home court. So in a lot of ways it's no shock that BET's hip-hop awards (hosted at Atlanta's Civic Center) was dominated by rappers of a certain sub-Mason-Dixon flavor. Wayne, as the man of the hour, held court for the evening with three accolades.
Wayne's trio of awards at the show including Lyricist of the Year (could it have been that line about geese erections?) and Alltel People's Champ. He also edged out T.I., Kanye West and Jay-Z for MVP of the Year (DJ Khaled was unavailable to comment on whether he'll retool one of the worst catchphrases in hip-hop with this loss).
Weezy used his acceptance speech to hit all the usual cash-money touchstones and had some words for his yet-to-be-born youngin': "I got a son about to be born any day now, so shout-out to him. Pray for me."
Other notables from the show include Shawty Lo's garnering of Rookie of the Year, and hip-hop tycoon Russell Simmons' I Am Hip-Hop Icon. Nas, T.I., Common, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross and Ludacris all performed. The show is set to air Oct. 23 on BET.
In related Weezy news, he dished to MTV before the show that he has a reimagining of Tha Carter III in the works. Not to be confused with his recent confirmation of Tha Carter IV, it'll be an updated album with "all-new songs". No track listing or release date is available yet for Tha Carter 3.5, but we'll keep you updated. In the meantime, there's always Weezy F's appetite for collaboration to get your fix.
