, one of the nation's largest folk music festivals, has just announced the line-up
for its 22nd annual festival. Slated to run April 23-26, this year's events include performances by Emmylou Harris
, Jim Lauderdale
, Travis Tritt and Jerry Douglas, Tift Merritt
, the Del McCoury Band
, and, of course, the father of MerleFest, Doc Watson
The festival was founded upon two missions: to raise money for the beautification of the Wilkes Community College Campus (MerleFest's home, in Wilkesboro, N.C.), and to honor the memory of Doc Watson's son, Merle, a young musician who died in a farming accident in 1985. MerleFest is committed to producing a "high quality diversified American roots based musical experience," a music culture Doc terms "traditional-plus."
So far the list of performers is 90+ deep, but Festival Director Ted Hagaman notes that "MerleFest is known for surprises and special moments. We still have a couple of things in the works, so we encourage fans to keep checking our website for updates to our talent line up."
Tickets go on sale Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. ET. Click here for info on pricing, schedules, contests and activities, volunteering, and more.
