Netflix deal with Starz adds 1,000 films to Watch Instantly

Netflix deal with Starz adds 1,000 films to Watch Instantly

Amid varied threats from like-minded competitors, Netflix has steadily maintained its dominance among nontraditional DVD services with a superior selection, social networking and other features. Most important among the company’s recent innovations, though, is Watch Instantly, a streaming catalog of thousands of film and TV titles that are available for free to most Netflix subscribers and help ensure Netflix’s long-term vitality as instant video becomes more widespread online.

After recent accords with Disney and CBS to expand Watch Instantly to include movies like Ratatouille and shows like CSI, Netflix has announced its biggest boost yet, a new deal with Starz to allow instant streaming video of 1,000 titles in the channel’s archives. Although that includes some filler titles, there are also many major movies, including last year’s best-picture winner No Country For Old Men, Superbad, Across the Universe, the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels and more. The titles are already available on the site.

Netflix also recently announced that it is close to a solution to one of the biggest drawbacks of the current Watch Instantly service, its PC-exclusive platform. In a post on the site’s official blog, Netflix said Mac users would be able to take advantage of the service by the end of the year.
