Amidst Athens, Ga.'s dance-inspiring rock 'n' roll scene, which featured the likes of The B-52's and Pylon, college-rock upstarts R.E.M. released full-length debut Murmur in 1983. It went gold, became Rolling Stone's album of the year (beating out Thriller) and began the path that would eventually lead to this year's Accelerate.
Included on the upcoming double-disc Deluxe Edition (out Nov. 25 via I.R.S./UMe) are the remastered album and a previously unreleased concert recording done at a Toronto show only a few months after Murmur's release. At the set, the band played two-thirds of Murmur, early versions of tracks from follow-up albums Reckoning and Lifes Rich Pageant, and a Velvet Underground cover. Essays by producers Don Dixon and Mitch Easter, as well as I.R.S. label executives, fill out package.
