"The Star Witness" saw the Darlings all split off into different storylines, at times seeming as if the writers were incapable of creating content for more than two people per scene. It was the soapiest episode of the season thus far and also one of the weakest. The introduction of Nick’s estranged mother should have been the core storyline, however, it played second fiddle to the completely absurd romantic entanglements of the Darling children.

Nick finally met Claire, the mother who abandoned him as a small child. He only meets her because she is a witness in Letitia's trial. Nick's reunion with his mother was one of the few thing about the episode that was truly compelling. The fractured relationship wasn't instantly repaired. There were no bold confessions of love and forgiveness. Nick was hurt and his mother felt guilty. However, both knew that a relationship could not exist between the two of them. Claire also realized that making Letitia suffer would not fix the broken relationship with Nick. Nick was also finally able to understand that Letitia always saw him as one of her children, for better or worse.

Parental relationships also played a role in the episode's only other noteworthy storyline. Brian attempted to kidnap his son from Argentina because he believes Brian Jr.'s mother is negligent. Turns out she's simply too proud to live on the Darling fortune and chooses to support her son by working. The idea of real employment is a novelty to the Darlings, but Brian ultimately decides to leave his son in Argentina. And yet, resourceful little Brian Jr. decides to stowaway on his father's plane.

The other children were less interesting and had similar stories. Karen is still an idiot being played by Simon. Patrick is still an idiot being played by Tripp. Jeremy is still just an idiot. They are all in secret relationships that, unfortunately, keep them separate from the family. The best parts of Dirty Sexy Money are the familial relationships. The sexual escapades are just frosting on the cake. The show has increasingly become one big shapeless pile of frosting. Meanwhile, the heart of the series is slowing drying up.

Brian moment of the episode:
Brian is sitting on his plane flying back home when Brian Jr. pokes his tiny little head out from the liquor cabinet and smiles.
