By the time Johnny Cash recorded Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's "I See A Darkness" for his American Recordings series in 2000, Will Oldham could justifiably have rested on his laurels. Shoulder-patting from the great Cash—what more could a modern folk artist have hoped for?
Oldham's constantly reinventing his sound, so it's hard to guess what the album will hold—except by examining the album's announced guest musicians for clues: Jon Langford of the Mekons, Nicole Mitchell and Rob Mazurek of Exploding Star Orchestra, experimental musician Azita Youssifi, one-time Wilco member LeRoy Bach, vocalist Dee Alexander and others. Oh, and Oldham's backing band of Jennifer Hutt, Cairo Gang's Emmett Kelly, Michael Zerang and Town and Country's Josh Abrams. Um...so the album could sound like anything.
The 'Prince' will head out on tour around the release of Beware! (starting with a two-show night in Minneapolis), but until then you can hope he previews some tracks at a Save Kentucky's Hemlock's benefit or a handful of dates in Brazil.
Beware! track list:
1. Beware Your Only Friend
2. You Can't Hurt Me Now
3. My Life's Work
4. Death Final
5. Heart's Arms
6. You Don't Love Me
7. You Are Lost
8. I Won't Ask Again
9. I Don't Belong to Anyone
10. There Is Something I Have to Say
