Bono to write op-ed column for New York Times

U2's Bono, famous musician, hob-nobber and philanthropist, has been invited by The New York Times to pen a column for the publication's Op-Ed page.

"We have asked Bono to write an occasional column for the paper next year, covering a range of subjects, but are still finalizing the details," said a spokesperson for the New York Times Company.

At Columbia School of Journalism, the Times' Editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal announced that Bono would complete six to 10 columns next year, and his subjects would include poverty, Africa and Frank Sinatra. Rosenthal added that Bono would not be paid for his contributions.

The U2 frontman is not the first musician to write for The New York Times. Bruce Springsteen wrote for the Op-Ed page in 2004 and Brian May, Queen-guitarist-turned-astrophysicist, has contributed to a blog entitled "Across the Universe."

As the new U2 album is due early next year, it seems likely that Bono will be working on his column while touring with the band. Click here for more U2 news.
