Back in September, Danny Boyle told MTV News he had an idea for a sequel to 28 Weeks Later, but said it “might be silly” and that he hadn’t run it by anyone officially. Since then there have been assorted rumors about possible directors and plot ideas, but perhaps unsurprisingly, no confirmations.
SciFi.com now reports that Boyle has gone a little further, suggesting he might want to return to the franchise as a director. “I'd certainly
like to,” Boyle said of directing the next movie. “I feel the idea is quite a strong idea, and it could well
involve directing it. Yeah, absolutely.” (Boyle directed 28 Days Later
but was only a producer on 28 Weeks Later, helmed by Juan Carlos
Fresnadillo.)
Boyle’s idea for the movie, meanwhile, seemed not to have gestated much
further. “I’ve got an idea for it, so I can't really tell you any more
than that at the moment, but hopefully that might happen,” he said. He previously said the new film might be set in Russia, a depature from the first two, which takes place mostly in London.
28 Weeks Later’s final shot, involving an unmistakable Parisian
landscape, clearly suggested the possibility of another sequel.
Alternatively dystopian and hopeful, the Days films are widely
considered some of the best horror movies to emerge in recent years.
Both were modest financial successes, though revenues for 28 Weeks
Later lagged well behind the original’s, which had quelled some expectations for
another sequel.
