Signs of Life 2008: Best Music Scene - Denton, Texas

Dust Congress
Nick Foreman’s chamber-folk group—comprised of marimba, upright bass, bassoon, trumpet and Foreman on banjo, bass drum and hi-hat (all at once)—has gradually gelled into one of the most intriguing live ensembles in Denton. The band is currently hard at work on its first full-length.

Audrey Lapraik
Possessed of the most ethereal, world-weary Texas twang this side of Lucinda Williams, Lapraik's minimalist folk is so earnest and fragile, one durst not move lest one break it.

Shiny Around the Edges
Shiny distills early Velvet Underground dissonance and percussive primitivism and wraps both around Thurston Moore's destroyed guit...ah the heck with it. They're loud and weird. You need to see em.

Centro-matic/South San Gabriel
Will Johnson is a singular, prolific songwriting talent, but Centro-matic is every bit a band. The ensemble's unique chemistry, from Matt Pence's throttled drum sound to Scott Danbom's aching falsetto playing against Johnson's vocals like an indie-rock Everly Brothers, embodies the Denton ideal as well as any group ever has.

Marked Men
There is nothing, let me repeat, nothing new about Marked Men. You have heard this music before. The Sex Pistols. The Buzzcocks. The Replacements. You do the math. But for a band whose elemental components are so transparent, the amazing, let me repeat, amazing thing, and probably what led Matador Records' Gerard Cosloy to call them "the best band in the world," is that they actually make you wonder whether you ever enjoyed those bands as much as you enjoy listening to Marked Men.

Bridges and Blinking Lights
Coy, clever and shameless, Bridges and Blinking Lights sets its brazen pop hook-mongering in a weightless, irresistible bed of shoegaze.

Matthew and the Arrogant Sea
With tuneful psychedelic folk underwritten by omnichord, xylophone and a pronounced hippie vibe, Matthew and the Arrogant Sea's charming first record Family Family Family Meets the Magic Christian, has been released on Nova Posta, Eric Pulido (Midlake) and Robert Gomez' new label.

Daniel Folmer

One of the most promising young songwriters in a city teeming with them, Folmer's indie-folk combines an undeniable gift for melody with a transparent lyricism and an innate feel for detailed, haunting imagery.

The Slow Burners

If George Neal's former band, Little Grizzly was The Band meets Hüsker Dü, The Slow Burners might be Lola-era Kinks with Shane MacGowan's penchant for dark historical narrative. Neal's talent for character-driven songwriting has been a mainstay in Denton for seventeen years.
