Steve Carell may headline beaver puppet film

Despite the occasional slip-up, Steve Carell has shown admirable restraint as the major studios have tried to turn him into a generic clone of his contemporaries. So perhaps we owe him the benefit of the doubt—even when, as The Hollywood Reporter states, his next movie might be the story of a man obsessed with a beaver puppet.

It’s better than Get Smart 2, right? The movie, called The Beaver, follows a man who carries said beaver on his hand and treats it as a near-human companion. That’s it, we’re afraid, but to Carell’s credit, the script has reportedly caught the eye of several studios that will wait to see which names become attached before they pick up distribution rights.

No, it doesn’t sound like the most dynamic premise—or, after Lars and the Real Girl, like the most original one—but you never know. With Carell’s life signed away (creatively, anyway) to NBC and Warner Bros. for the next several years, it’s not clear where this project would fit into his schedule, but that’s why it’s still in the planning stage.
