Vampires are just the beginning. One of the underlying mysteries of the first eight episodes was what Sam was hiding. Circumstantial evidence and a glimpse of his temper with Sookie made him a suspect in the murders around town, but too much else pointed to him being a genuine decent fellow. But his surprise was much more interesting, and I missed all the clues until just before the big reveal at the end of Episode 9.

In "Plaisur D'Amour, Bill Compton must face the reckoning for killing another vampire to save a human. What this means is still anybody's guess, but he'll be going away for a while. Sookie finally discovers Sam and Tara's budding relationship, making her feel more alone than ever. Jason's new flame Amy Burley (portrayed by Lizzy Caplan) talks him into kidnapping the most pathetic (and possibly most likeable) vampires we've seen. Amy is turning into something of a psychopath (could she be the real killer?) and Jason so far is going along for the ride.

The overarching theme of the show seems to be tolerance. Bill is a vampire with a respect for humans. Sookie is a human with respect for vampires. The most interesting characters are either black, gay or both. The villains are those who care only for their own kind, whether vampires, humans... or something completely new.
