Whether she was fired or walked off and came to a “mutual decision” with Summit Entertainment, director Catherine Hardwicke will not return for New Moon, the sequel to Twilight.
There is an official story, of course, from Summit, which contends that
Hardwicke and the studio wanted different time frames for the next
movie. Hardwicke wanted time to work on the sequel’s script
and to develop the project, and Summit, with dollar signs in its eyes,
told her no way. Nikki Finke also cites the requisite “insider” who
frames Hardwicke as an incorrigible diva who wasn’t to thank for
the first movie’s success anyway.
What actually happened is anyone’s guess.
Since Twilight marked the biggest opening ever for a female director in
Hollywood, there are already whispers that should Summit choose a man
to helm the next film in the franchise—which, after all, is written by
a woman and has a female-dominated fanbase—there could be an outcry.
Given that the pervasive hype for the movie centered on a figure of the opposite sex, though, that doesn’t seem especially likely.
Summit has launched a search for a new director, and given
the rapid development, we should know who that will be soon.

I really loved Twilight and actually saw it twice in the theater and can't wait for the DVD to be released. It definitely followed the theme and the tone of the book. For me, Catherine Hardwicke did a great job with bringing the book to life. In terms of the critics, a lot of the time, when the majority of them rant and rave about a movie, I don't like it. They tend to like the odd ones and Twilight is a brilliant love story brought to life by Catherine Hardwicke on the big screen. What happen to working together for the greater good of the film and the audience?
I can't imagine why Summit would want to fix something that isn't broken. The movie is making money for them. I do have questions/concerns about changing the director such as how will the continuity of the sequel be affected? How will the cast react to a new director? What will the overall feel on the set be like? Will Summit rush through the making of the movie just to get the almighty dollar quickly while sacrificing the integrity of New Moon? Catherine really understands the feel of the book series and is devoted to keeping the movie true to the book in the best possible way.
We have Catherine Hardwicke and Kristen Stewart to thank for choosing Rob Pattinson as Edward. Rob portrays Edward perfectly and I cannot imagine what would have happened if another director would have been in the driver seat for Twilight. We might have missed out on the phenomenal chemistry between Rob and Kristin and what makes the movie,Twilight, the success it is to Twilight fandom. I hope Summit reconsiders their decision.
The last time I watched a movie 4 times in the theater and left still wanting for more was Pretty Woman. Twilight is for me, the love story movie of the decade. I L-O-V-E Twilight and its characters and I think Catherine did a FANTASTIC job bringing the book to life. I actually hadn't read any of the Twilight series books by Stephenie before I watched the movie. The movie inspired me to read the books which inspired me to watch the movie again! I'm a mother of 2 in my thirties and if this film can appeal to my generation as well as teenagers, I say it is a timeless classic. The chemistry between the actors, the style of the movie, the way the scenes were crafted, the writing and soundtrack were superb. There was no scene or dialog wasted in the movie. Even though the sequence of events changed slightly from the book, every important moment from the book was captured in the movie. Apart from the meadow scene which I thought was short of the passion it should have had, I think the crew and cast of Twilight have done a marvelous job and i am utterly disappointed Catherine won't be returning. I can't say I'm excited that Chris Weitz being the choice of director in the next film as he hasn't directed anything in this genre that I admire. At least only the director has changed. Glad that Taylor would be back as Jacob Black.
