Director Catherine Hardwicke out for Twilight sequel

Director Catherine Hardwicke out for Twilight sequel

Whether she was fired or walked off and came to a “mutual decision” with Summit Entertainment, director Catherine Hardwicke will not return for New Moon, the sequel to Twilight.

There is an official story, of course, from Summit, which contends that Hardwicke and the studio wanted different time frames for the next movie. Hardwicke wanted time to work on the sequel’s script and to develop the project, and Summit, with dollar signs in its eyes, told her no way. Nikki Finke also cites the requisite “insider” who frames Hardwicke as an incorrigible diva who wasn’t to thank for the first movie’s success anyway.

What actually happened is anyone’s guess.

Since Twilight marked the biggest opening ever for a female director in Hollywood, there are already whispers that should Summit choose a man to helm the next film in the franchise—which, after all, is written by a woman and has a female-dominated fanbase—there could be an outcry. Given that the pervasive hype for the movie centered on a figure of the opposite sex, though, that doesn’t seem especially likely.

Summit has launched a search for a new director, and given the rapid development, we should know who that will be soon.
