One of the brightest lights of music video directors has long been Mark Romanek. Although he never had quite as much vision as his Propaganda peers David Fincher and Spike Jonze, there's no denying his technical mastery. If other directors sometimes treated videos like short films, Romanek used his chameleon-like skills to match his filmmaking to whatever best fit with the music.
Despite the success of his second feature One Hour Photo in
2002, Romanek has stayed out of the director's chair. He's been
involved with a few projects, but all of them fell through and left him
back to work on videos and commercials. Romanek may finally be back to
the big screen, though, as according to /Film he's attached to direct an adaption of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go.
The book is about Kathy H., a seemingly normal woman slowly and
subtlely revealed to be a clone bred for organ donation. It's
sometimes regarded as Ishiguro's greatest work, and given its
international success and relatively straightforward and adaptable plot,
it's almost a surprise it hasn't been adapted yet. Writing the
screenplay will be Alex Garland, who's previously responsible for 28 Days Later and Sunshine.
