Black Lips safe and sound after all

Black Lips safe and sound after all

If you heard about what happened to Black Lips in India over the weekend, you might have thought, "Wow! This is too unthinkable to be true." In part, you'd be right (surprise, surprise), though the Lips did flee the country to a safe house in Germany.

A few days after the band described an oversees nightmare that would make for a great scene in a This is Spinal Tap-esque mockumentary, Vice Records, the band's label, had an IM chat with drummer Joe Bradley. His version of the story, we hate to say, is slightly less notorious and glamorous as the one we reported yesterday. The worst part: They didn't exactly flee police after their rowdy, drunken show in Chennai. The Indian concert promoters were, however, worried it would come to that. Looks like they did, in fact, flee from the police after all.

Says Bradley, "They kept saying if it had happened in Delhi it would have not been such a big deal, but since we were in Chennai they told us that if anyone filed a complaint with the police the festival people would inform the authorities of our location and it would have been about a week dealing with jails and embassies and so on. It's really hard to say what was going on, it certainly wasn't a calm atmosphere. I would like to think that we would have been OK in Chennai and we could have gone on to finish the shows in Calcutta the next day, but the company was so paranoid they booked us overnight cars to drive out of the state."

So, there you have it. Scary, for sure, but maybe not the "slipped out the other emergency exit" fiasco it appeared to be. Hey, a little color in a story never hurt anything, right? Thanks for the entertainment, Black Lips.
