Dr. Doug Ross, the original heartthrob of TV medical drama (take that, McDreamy!), will return to ER for the show's final season. Reports suggest that George Clooney has been on a closed set shooting episode 20, which will air April 2 on NBC.
Clooney was part of ER's original cast in 1994 and left the show, which was considered his big break, in 2000. ER was created by the late Michael Crichton (based on the author's experiences at Harvard medical school), and ends its run as the second-longest TV drama after Law and Order.
Julianna Marguiles, Clooney's love interest in the drama, is also said to return for a few episodes. The original pilot written by Crichton had Marguiles' character commit suicide, but that part of the script was deleted, and Clooney and Marguiles' chemistry added much to the show.
Rumor has it that NBC has added three episodes to the season, and these may feature both Clooney and Marguiles.
