SXSW 2009 line-up coming together nicely

SXSW 2009 line-up coming together nicely

With South by Southwest less than three months away, there's been a steady trickle of details on the gargantuan festival that holds Austin, Texas hostage for one week every Spring. First, the nice folks running the festival announced that producer Quincy Jones will be giving the festival's keynote address. Rad. Then the organizers leaked the first set of bands officially billed to festival, which included the likes of Beach House, These Arms Are Snakes and Primal Scream. Double Rad. Since then, however, news has been slow to come out of the SXSW camp.

That steady trickle of news from SXSW has turned into a full-on flood, with the festival confirming no fewer than 130 bands that will appear at the festival. And more bands are to be added in the coming days.

Highlights from the the list the likes of Akron/Family, Asobi Seksu, Ben Kweller, Blaqstarr, Buck 65, Crystal Method, Explosions in the Sky, Kid Sister, Killer Mike, Peter Bjorn & John, Port O'Brien, Sage Francis and Thee Oh Sees. And for all the old school garage rock fans, it looks like The Sonics' on-again-off-again reunion is on again, with a performance at SXSW.

The appropriately named blog Done Waiting is also maintaining a list of unconfirmed SXSW acts, which the blog culled from MySpace pages, news blurbs, and "other shadow sources." A quick glance through the list reveals some hypothetical do-not-miss sets by the likes of Andrew Bird, Black Lips, Ferraby Lionheart, Jason Isbell, The Brunettes and The Thermals, all of which we're hoping actually end up at the real festival in March. We need to stress that nobody is calling Done Waiting's line up definitive. Case-in-point: Deer Tick is curiously missing from Done Waiting's lineup, although Brooklyn Vegan has reported that the band will be performing at the festival. And we have a weird hunch that a lot the MySpace confirmed bands may simply be playing in Austin during the festival officially for the SXSW shindig. (We're looking squarely in your direction, Fuckshovel.)

We've reprinted SXSW's staggeringly long list of confirmed acts below. Can you guess who will be this year's Tapes 'n Tapes? Our bets are on DANANANANAYKROYD
