To look back at MTV’s The Osbournes now is an exercise in unlikely nostalgia. With its blithe, fiction-straddling vision of a celebrity family, the show seemed like a benign curiosity at the time, but little could we have imagined how influential it would become.
It was a major step toward the bizarre spectacle of reality shows that
now dominate some cable channels, but it quickly became a relic. Now, six years later, Fox has hired the Osbournes to host a series of variety specials, dubbed Osbournes Reloaded, which will include audience competitions, skits and, according
to Reuters, “a pair of ‘mini-Osbournes’ — (British) child actors who
dress, behave and talk as outrageously as Ozzy and wife Sharon
themselves.”
Fox has tentative plans for a launch date this spring. There are already six episodes shot, but in a sign of how familiar the
family’s reality act has become, Fox will wait to see the size of the
viewership before it orders more.
