After helping children reconnect with nature by collaborating in the Ask the Planet project, Brandi Carlile is ready to hit the road and debut new songs from her upcoming third album, the follow-up to 2007's The Story.
Carlile says that despite the fact it's a record of new material, fans of her work will likely recognize some of the tracks. "Like The Story, some of the songs have been around," she says. "I tend to feel really protective of songs, and if they aren't sitting well in a record, I'll pull them tight to my chest until i feel it's a better time. Some of the songs we have been playing on the road for a couple of years as we tend to cultivate our songs on stage."
Fittingly enough, Carlile and her band will be playing all over the U.S. and a little bit abroad. After her performance in Kentucky, Carlile will join Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin and Buddy Miller aboard the Cayamo, a 7-day music cruise from Feb. 28 through Mar. 7, before completing the rest of her tour.
Carlile warns listeners that they should be prepared for something new and perhaps more than a little epic with the new record. "This record sounds much more reckless than The Story," she says. "Some songs are so stripped down and intimate you should feel uncomfortable listening to them and some are so giant that Freddie Mercury wouldn't have put them on A Night at the Opera."
The still-untitled third album will be released sometime this summer or fall and will include at least one high-profile guest.
"Amy Ray [of the Indigo Girls] sings on 'Looking Out,'" Carlile reveals. "She is a real muse for me and I love her voice. She has a voice that isn't male or female. She can sing with me on a song and it doesn't matter if it's a power ballad or a folk song; its gonna sound heavy. I'm also in the process of begging Elton John to play a song with me."

Brandi is amazing. This is a great article. Thanks!
As a die hard fan of Brandi Carlile's music I am most excited for the new album to come out because I know it's going to be so much different than the sounds on The Story and the self-titled album (both of which I listen to religously).
I've heard some of the new songs on
you-tube videos taken by fans at recent concerts and I must say I'm exicited to hear the polished(non-video static) versions done in studio quality and with the additon of unique instruments. ;) It wouldn't surprise me if I heard kazoos somewhere.
Geez you can't go wrong with Rick Rubin either...probably the best producer out there. Must have been amazing to work with him and of course Ms. Amy Ray.
I admire how the band is not relying on Pro-Tools, but is relying on their true talent in the recording studio. BRAVO. It's always a drag when you hear an album and then go to a show and the musician doesn't sound at all like the album. Not with this band.
And Freddie Mercury might not have put some of the songs on his album, but I'll be willing to bet that he'd be impressed with the songs. I can hear a subtle Queen influence in the new music like with the foot stomping in How These Days Grow Long ('39),. and the addition of the ukelele in Oh Dear (Seaside Rendezvous).
Needless to say I'll be eagerly awaiting this album and the upcoming tour. Oh...and Elton John should be begging Brandi to sing with him. ;)
Over and out...
It's been 2 long years since her last album. I wait anxiously for her next. She IS my favorite artist of all time! Extrememly talented and definintly unique. I can listen to her all day long. I haven't heard a song that I didn't love. There's no other Brandi!
Correction on my comment above...meant to say:
"and the addition of the ukelele in Oh Dear (Good Company)."
Chad Smith??? As in the red hot chili peppers chad smith??? Brandi rocks with everyone these days! I'm so proud to have been a brandi fan from the start!
