Classic-series Battlestar Galactica movie possibly on the way

Classic-series Battlestar Galactica movie possibly on the way

Star Wars and the original Battlestar Galactica have more in common than you might realize. When ABC produced the show in the late 1970s, they brought on George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic crew (though they weren't called that at the time) to run special effects. Lucas agreed, but only on the stipulation that none of Star Wars' special effects be used. Things didn't work out as planned and, after a slew of lawsuits, Galactica never really recovered. We probably should be thankful; had Galactica been a smash success, it might not have been rebooted into one of the smartest and most compelling shows on television today.

You may be wondering where this is going. If the new trilogy of Star Wars movies can be said to be the fluffy, substanceless doppelganger to the genre-defining sci-fi of the first trilogy, the 1978 version of Battlestar Galactica is a shallow reflection of the Peabody-winning reimagined version. Well, classic Galactica may be making a comeback of its own: Universal Pictures is in negotiations for Glen A. Larson to create a movie version of the TV show he created.

The movie will, necessarily, be totally unrelated to the nearly-concluded reimagined series on Sci-Fi. That's all we know on the movie for now, but just think: isn't the possibility of a little more Dirk Benedict in your life exciting?
