Tower of Power preps The Great American Soulbook
Funky 10-piece Tower Of Power is poised to enter middle-age in style. The band turns 41 this year, and the hip-shaking, horn-blasting group is preparing to release The Great American Soulbook, a cover album of soul greats.Saxophonist and group co-founder Emilio Castillo told Billboard that the group was reluctant to do a soul-cover album."We were like, 'Yeah, yeah, everybody's doing that.'" However, when recording was underway, the group warmed up to the album. "[We] started thinking, 'Boy this is gonna be really cool,' and it turned out really good."
Tracks on the album include Aretha Franklin's "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone," Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs. Jones" and Tavares' "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel." The CD will also feature a four-song James Brown tribute.
