After being treated like a red-headed stepchild and mismanaged by the bumbling Fox network, Futurama, the sometimes uneven sci-fi comedy developed by Matt Groening, may return to the station's line-up after all.
The announcement comes by way of Billy West, who voiced Ren and Stimpy, not to mention most of the notable male characters from Futurama, including Professor Farnsworth, Fry and Zapp Brannigan.
Futurama debuted in 1999 and was cancelled in 2003. It then aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in a block with Family Guy. It's run on Adult Swim ended in 2007 when Cartoon Network's contract expired and Comedy Central picked it up. Even with re-runs maintaining popularity, it was likely that sales of the show's four straight-to-DVD movies are what finally garnered interest. Surprisingly, Groening wasn't the first to make a move on the DVDs. He (The Simpsons) has said, "I was frustrated when the show got canceled, but Fox 20th Television is the one who came back and said, 'Would you like to do a DVD movie?'"
Family Guy had a similar fate with Fox and was the first television show to be revived by DVD sales. Futurama's DVD, The WIld Green Yonder, will be released on Feb. 24.
