Kill Rock Stars signs Portland Cello Project

Apparently those folks up at the Olympia/Portland-based label Kill Rock Stars don't have enough on their hands with Deerhoof, Horse Feathers and The Shaky Hands, because they recently signed indie-orchestra Portland Cello Project. Add in Elliot Smith's legacy, and it's a wonder label president Portia Sabin and crew get any sleep at all.

Portland Cello Project (PCP) is an independent ensemble of roughly 8-16 cellists, which prides itself on bundling up the sacred and profane with a gorgeous melodic ribbon; from Arvo Part to Britney Spears to Bach. The orchestra has collaborated with a veritable who's who of Northwest talent, including Laura Gibson, Horse Feathers, The Dandy Warhols, The Builders and The Butchers and Loch Lomond.

Kill Rock Stars plans to release an upcoming CD of PCP music featuring Thao Nguyen (of Thao with the Get Down, Stay Down). It will also host a slew of pre-release shows at the opening weekend of Portland's new Mississippi Studios: two shows (7 and 10 PM) on Friday, March 6 with Storm Large, Justin Power and Thao, two shows on Saturday, March 7 with Tu Fawning, Justin Power and Thao, and one 2 PM all-ages matinee show on Sunday, March 8 with Justin Power and Thao.
