Jerry Seinfeld says, "What's the deal with reality television?" and thus, a show is spawned. There was really no way to avoid that lead, as news has surfaced that Seinfeld is working on a new reality TV show, tentatively titled The Marriage Ref.
As far as reality-based vehicles go, producers probably could have come up with a better idea for the comedian. Still, many will be happy to see his return to NBC after an 11-year absence.
The show's premise is to invite athletes, comedians and celebrities to coach bickering married couples. (After all, everyone knows that the majority of successful relationships are spawned from these professions. Wait, no?) This juggernaut will be brought to you by Seinfeld's production company in cooperation with Oprah Winfrey's executive producer, Ellen Rakieten. An exact time slot has not yet been determined, but six one-hour episodes have been ordered for next Fall by NBC.
Seinfeld said in a statement, "This is not a therapy show, it's a comedy show. After nine years of marriage, I have discovered that the comedic potential of this subject is quite rich."
