Before Mark Mothersbaugh began composing soundtracks, before “Whip It” became a Swiffer commercial and long before McDonald’s was sued for New Wave Nigel, the American Idol Happy Meal toy with a red energy dome on his noggin, there was Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo!, Devo’s synth-punk 1978 debut. And it was good.
The band, still with the lot of its original members intact, along with The Vandals’ Josh Freese on drums, will perform the album live in its entirety May 6 at the London Kentish Town Forum (sharing no relation, of course, to Kent State University, the college where Mothersbaugh met bassist and synthesizer player Gerald Casale.) This will be the first and possibly only time Devo plays the album from tracks 1 ("Uncontrollable Urge") to 11 ("Shrivel Up") without anything in between. Tickets for the event are £30.
Also, a couple days later on May 8 new wavers will play a greatest-hits show at the All Tomorrow's Parties (ATP) Festival, also in London.
