Update: According to the L.A. Times, Judd Apatow won't be involved in Ghostbusters III. "It's not true," Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, tells LAT. "We
have some great new writers working on a new script, but Judd isn't
involved. Judging from the frenzy on the Internet, there still seems to
be plenty of interest in the idea of doing another film, so we're
certainly taking that as a good sign."

Something strange in your neighborhood? Something going on and it don't look good? Who you gonna call? Judd Apatow, apparently. Months-old rumors that Apatow might be involved with Ghostbusters III (up until a recent confirmation from Dan Aykroyd, the film itself had been rumored itself since 2005) may have finally come to fruition.
The
news comes from /Film by way of
Production Weekly. It had been rumored for some time that Apatow might get involved, but no one seems to know if initial rumors were based on a snippet of fact or just wishful thinking turned into gossip. At any rate, in September 2008 Aykroyd
alluded that McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) could take one of the starring roles in the film (replacing
Rick Moranis?).
Recently we
reported that Aykroyd had verified shooting on
Ghostbusters III was set for the fall. With Apatow involved, you can bet a) his cronies such as Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd will likely star and b) hilarity will ensue.
It's likely the original cast will still be involved, at the very least providing cameos. That is, assuming that Aykroyd can pull himself away from hawking
mystical beverages, and Bill Murray is over his streak as a serious actor (
City of Ember would imply yes, but Murray is currently shooting the drama
Get Low in Georgia).
