Like Paste and most of Twitter, Jonathan Demme was at SXSW last week, in his case to screen portions of his new Neil Young doc, Neil Young Trunk Show. In the meantime, the veteran director (Rachel Getting Married) revealed to MTV that after he completes his latest documentaries (he also has a Bob Marley flick on the way), he will return to fiction to write and direct an adaptation of Michel Faber’s The Courage Consort.
Consort is a collection of three novellas; Demme will focus on the story of
woman in an “avant-garde vocal ensemble” who faces a jarring tragedy
that rattles the entire group. Demme told MTV that the movie will
continue his new inclination away from studio fare and into, as he put
it, the sort of movie that “doesn’t have to open up in a thousand
theaters” to be considered a success.
The project is still in very early stages, and it seems likely it won’t pop up until a couple years down the line.
