Let The Right One In encounters DVD controversy

Tomas Alfredson’s Let The Right One In DVD release has encountered some very angry customers. The DVD version shows drastically different subtitles than the subtitles shown in theaters, often missing the dark humor that made the movie so popular. The Swedish adaptation was screened in less than 50 theater screens and became available on March 10 on DVD via Magnolia/Magnet.

Magnet released a statement to address the fan outrage through the DVD website Digital Bits. “We’ve been made aware that there are several fans that don’t like the version of the subtitles on the DVD. We had an alternate translation that we went with. Obviously a lot of fans thought we should have stuck with the original theatrical version. We are listening to the fans feedback, and going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version.”

Following this statement, Magnet began offering new DVD titles with the theatrical subtitles and they can be identified by looking at the back of the box where it should read “SUBTITLES: ENGLISH (Theatrical), SPANISH.” However, Magnet will not offer exchanges or refunds to the fans of the vampire movie that have already purchased the altered version.

You can see the difference in the subtitles below:
