Abigail Washburn has teamed up with Shanghai Restoration Project (Dave Liang's Shanghai jazz/hip hop creation) to record a benefit album for relocated children in China's Sichuan province. Afterquake blends the pioneering sounds of Shanghai Restoration Project with Washburn's folk and the voices of local children. It will be released on May 12, the anniversary of the tragic Sichuan Earthquake.
The earthquake, which killed more than 88,000 people less than three months before China was supposed to host the 2008 Summer Olympics, left upwards of five million homeless or relocated, many of them children. A portion of the proceeds from the album will go to the Sichuan Quake Relief organization.Washburn was inspired to create the album last year when she was volunteering with the organization, performing in relocation schools with children far from their homes and families. Her project interested Dave Liang, and the two headed off to the Sichuan countryside to record the album.
The May 12 release will be in the form of a digital EP and limited edition CD.
