When we talked to Danny McBride just before the premiere of Eastbound and Down, the HBO series he co-created with Jody Hill and Ben Best, he said he and his old friends first envisioned the story as a three-hour movie that viewers could consume for a half hour a week. The six-episode first season fulfilled that promise, but HBO has decided to bring the series back for a second go-around to premiere sometime next year.
The show, which follows a former baseballer who retreats back to his hometown, has received fond critical
notice for its blunt rejection of a traditional hero. The
news comes at a hectic time for the co-creators—Hill wrote
and directed Observe and Report, in theaters this weekend, which features
McBride and Best as co-stars.
