Eastern Promises 2 may reunite Mortensen and Cronenberg

If, like most people, you had the feeling that the movie Eastern Promises had a lot of potential, but rushed the ending (spoiler coming up soon), then a resolution to that problematic conclusion may have presented itself. In an unprecedented move, director David Cronenberg announced that he's moving towards a sequel. (Cronenberg has never directed a sequel to any of his movies, although The Fly and Scanners both had sequels.)

Despite the fact that Viggo Mortensen seems to be subliminally signaling for us to expect Eastern Promises 2 in the above screenshot, this comes as rather unexpected news. When Mortensen confided that he was an undercover agent for the British government at the end of Eastern Promises, audience reaction was along the lines of either a) WTF? You are really deep undercover; you totally hacked a corpse to pieces, or b) WTF? This is how it ends? Isn't that a little bit abrupt?

The screenwriter and producer of the original film will also be on board. /Film stresses that the sequel isn't a certainty as there are a series of things that need to occur in succession: Steven Knight needs to write a great script, everyone needs to agree on it, and Mortensen and Cronenberg need to find matching gaps in their schedules. But the catalyst is there, at least: an urge and a proclamation to make the movie.
