Unlike No Direction Home, the Martin Scorsese doc that received unprecedented access to Bob Dylan, John Gilbert never managed to get Dylan’s blessing for his work. But that hasn’t stopped Gilbert from making six movies about him.
The latest, Bob Dylan Never Ending Tour Diaries: Drummer Winston Watson's Incredible Journey, hit DVD earlier this month. According to Variety, the series of films began when Gilbert encountered a former Dylan associate at a cancer benefit, and his film work branched out from there. Gilbert’s films have featured iconic names like the late Jerry Wexler in an unfiltered approach to Dylan’s legacy.Winston Watson's Incredible Journey is available at Amazon and on the movie’s official site. Gilbert told Variety that he’s never met Dylan and doesn’t expect to, but his unauthorized film business continues to develop.
