In a prospective money-making move that is equally baffling and exciting, MTV has decided to return to its roots and show more music videos. Of course, there's a catch: For anyone with a relatively normal sleep routine, the music will be hard to appreciate. On Monday, "AMTV" began showing music videos, interviews, news and performances from 3 to 9 a.m. The block of time, which has been called an advertising experiment for possible partnerships, will run Monday through Thursday. Three a.m. is an odd start time to be sure, but for a network that has become more synonymous with C-list celebrity reality than its actual namesake, it's a small step in a different, if not right, direction.
In addition to the videos, the New York Times reports that the network is also bringing back its once-popular "Unplugged." Stephen Friedman, the general manager of MTV told the Times, "If we take 'Unplugged,' which our audience still knows and loves, and do a four-minute version after our highest-rated program in prime time, and then we say, 'You can get it all immediately on MTV.com or see the full thing for the next four days in the morning,' we're going to have a lot more people watching."
