Rancid preps first album in six years, Booker T. guests

Green Day isn't the only Bay Area punk outfit to make a big announcement this week. After six years of hibernation, Tim Armstrong (no relation to Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, of course), Lars Frederiksen and what have to be some of the quickest fingers in the world on a bass fretboard, Matt Freeman, are returning with a new album on June 2, Let the Dominoes Fall.

This is the first album since 2003's Indestructible, which is a bit of a head-scratcher because that album, released through Warner Brothers, did so well; it peaked at 15 on the Billboard 200. Although there's little indication if this is a return to their debut-album roots, or a continuation of their progressive, Clash-esque diversity, Epitaph Records describes one of the 19 tracks, "Civilian Ways," as a "mostly acoustic" song documenting Armstrong's brother and his journey from being a soldier in Iraq to coming back home.

But the two biggest surprises we've heard is that a) the album was recorded at George Lucas' Skywalker Sound Studio, and b) Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Booker T. contributed some Hammond organ to the track "Up To No Good."

If you can't wait to hear the new material, you can head over to the band's MySpace and embed a widget to your blog or website. On April 7, the widget will turn into a player, broadcasting the song "Last One to Die." Here's an oldie but goody in the meantime:

The quartet will also hit the road with Rise Against two days after the new record drops.
