New York-based designer Anna Sui is planning a fall line for Target based on the CW hit Gossip Girl. Sui reportedly wants to create the line because she is often asked about the show by fans of her clothes.
The designer's line will hit 250 select Target stores on Sept. 13 and will be available through Oct. 7. Known for what people term her "youth centered" work (essentially, clothes that Gossip Girl herself would wear), Sui will be the second established designer after Alexander McQueen to showcase a collection under Target's Designer Collection series. According to New York magazine, Target is launching Sui's line as part of a strategy to motivate the "masses" to shop at Target (and hopefully outdo its "arch nemesis," Wal-Mart). Apparently the chain sees the CW hit as its golden ticket to success.
And Sui has none of that going-mainstream feeling of selling out. "It is an exciting challenge to try and interpret my aesthetic into a mass-produced product with a specific international source as the focus," she says.
