In early March, Fox stripped their rental DVDs of their special features in an attempt to increase DVD sale revenue. Disney will now follow their example by releasing two editions of the same DVD, the rental edition without any features and the retail edition.
However, Disney is taking a different path by selling the feature-less edition 25% cheaper than the retail copy, giving retailers the choice to buy either edition. The first titles to be affected by the new policy include Morning Light, Confessions of a Shopaholic and Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience, all of which will be released in June.
Fox continues to revise their new policy since they have already encountered problems with customers, with some retail DVDs, including Slumdog Millionaire, not containing the advertised features.
