"Follow the Leader" was a bridge episode, stretching between season five, thus far, and the season finale. Although little actually happened, the stage was set.
We started where we left off, in the jungle with the Hostiles. Mrs. Hawking has shot her son and he is, it appears, dead, but perhaps not for long. The grieving woman takes Jack, Kate and the long-lost Sayid on a mission to fulfill her son's last wishes and detonate the hydrogen bomb. This, of course, takes them through an underwater passage into a secret, ancient structure where their problem becomes how to get it out.
Juliet and Sawyer, meanwhile, are being interogated. They are finally freed and allowed to go in exchange for guiding a group of children off the island in a sub. As they're about to get onboard Sawyer turns around and spits good riddance, which means, most likely, they won't be gone for long.
Finally, as Locke and Ben trudge around together, we see that this season will probably end in a clash-of-the-titans struggle between the two megalomaniacs. Resurrected John Locke is more of a force to be reckoned with than even his stubborn old self. He says constantly that he has a purpose now and at the end of this episode he reveals that that purpose is to kill Jacob.
But, stuck in the past, all the characters really want to know if anything they do will actually change their future. Only time will tell.
