As a rule, musicians get pretty peeved when they feel they've been ripped off. But when the rockers of They Might Be Giants found out that their band name and art from their album No! was being used without their permission, they were the ones to shell out some cash.
One of Little League's newest teams, based in Seattle, named themselves after the band, and used the album art to inspire their mustard-colored, cartoon-covered t-shirts. When word of the team made its way to TMBG's hometown of Brooklyn, the guys, who won a Grammy in February for their childrens' album, Here Come the 123s, were thrilled.
"It's very flattering, and the photograph just knocked us out," TMBG guitarist John Flansburgh said. "Seeing
an entire Little League team all wearing the No! t-shirts just made
everyone in the band smile."
The band is so flattered, in fact, that they've decided to sponsor 10 more teams across the country. ("If a pizza parlor or a super market can sponsor a team, why can't a rock band?" Flansburgh asks.) Prospective teams can e-mail littleleague@tmbg.com with some of their important stats.
America's favorite pastime never looked so cool.
