Between Sesame Street (Tilly and the Wall) and Crayola (The Unicorns), it seems that kids sure are jumping headlong into cool music these days. Add Pete Fowler's psychedelic new cartoon, Monsterism Island, to that list.
Monsterism Island, a cartoon created by illustrator Pete Fowler, is set to tunes by the likes of Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals. Oh, and did we mention that it's recently been picked up by Disney?
Fowler, the man behind most of those slightly bizarre Super Furry Animals covers, creates the "monsters" as an ongoing project throughout his illustration career. Each monster has a backstory; some even have a corresponding designer toy, complete with very specific backstory (eerily reminiscent of Beanie Babies). And "Monsterism Island" is the place in Fowler's imagination where they all live and play together. Fowler's work has nearly always sported his colorful monsters, including car advertisements and even a recurring comic strip for Vice.
He's also releasing a corresponding album, aptly titled A Psychedelic Guide to Monsterism Island, that features more European underground music like Future Sound of London. If this all sounds completely random, just keep in mind that Rhys has been involved in stranger things before this.
