As you may have been able to tell from the plethora of posts about Record Store Day, April 18 was a big day for indie-music retailing. After all, the record store is one of the most enduring establishments of this little subculture we call rock 'n' roll; who can forget the excitement of going down to your local mom-n-pop on Tuesdays and scoping out the new releases? Evidently, not erstwhile Big Black frontman Steve Albini, who we've learned (from Daily Swarm) cut a rather whimsical ad in support of Record Store Day.
In it, he waxes poetic on Neil Young, tomatillos, and the similarities between a record store and a farmer's market, and explains why indie stores, not big-box chains, are so integral to the soul of modern music. "You could stock a whole store just with albums from Willie Nelson and The Fall. That's actually an amazing idea." Do tell. Read on at the Chicago Reader Blog, and share some of your favorite record store memories in the comments!
