Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records Coming in Sept.

Over the years, Merge Records has brought us Neutral Milk Hotel, Arcade Fire, Spoon, She & Him, and many other excellent bands that hold a permanent places on our playlists. What enabled this humble North Carolina indie imprint to become one of the best of the best? A forthcoming biography might just have the answers.

Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records, the Indie Label that Got Big and Stayed Small will follow the label as it began at the hands of 20-year-old founders Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance in a rented home during the late 1980s. Although the label is now run out of a bonafied office in Durham, N.C., there are still just 13 employees. Not bad for a label with international clout and more than 150 recordings released thus far.

Authored by Gawker writer John Cook, who has also written for Radar magazine, the nostalgic book includes interviews, photographs and a link to a streaming soundtrack online. Merge's musical taste is undoubtedly one of high standards, so the soundtrack alone is pretty enticing. Look out for the book on Sept. 15, or pre-order now at Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
