Did The Hangover Dupe the MPAA?

Zach Galifianakis has been widely hailed as the crossover star of The Hangover, which will open Friday to cheerleading reviews and big box-office hopes. But as early screenings of the movie continued this week, a debate has popped up: Are there really polaroids of Galifianakis getting a blow job during the end credits?

By all accounts, the shots are on early prints, but the question is whether they will make it into general theaters. The pictures, part of a sequence that explains what happened the night before "the hangover" in the movie, apparently include graphic images of a middle-aged woman doing the deed on the actor-comedian. They were, unsurprisingly, a huge hit with preview audiences.

But The Hangover got an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, and blow jobs aren’t exactly the kind of sex acts the agency gives a pass. Simulated sex, even without hardcore images, often earns an NC-17.

Some execs were overheard at one screening saying the image would be cut, but typically preview screenings held the week before a movie’s release contain the final cut. Vulture openly hopes that the MPAA just got lazy and audiences are in for an unexpected eyeful this weekend.
