"They have a plan" was the oft-repeated mantra of the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica's opening sequence: an ominous warning about the Cylon scheme to exterminate the human race. While the whole "having a plan" thing may not have been totally true as far as the show's writing was concerned, the Cylons' machinations did indeed form a coherent narrative, even if we never got to see their perspective on their attempted genocide of humanity.
Of course, like any venerable sci-fi franchise, the time is ripe for spin-offs. Namely, the Edward James Olmos-directed flick The Plan, which promises to explain the particulars of the titular Cylon stratagem to wipe out the human race. In fact, as Olmos intimated in a recent panel interview with the LA Times, it might take your breath away.
"I gotta tell you, not to give anything away, it is exactly what you think it is. You see the complete opposite of the first 281 days of what we went through... seen through the eyes of the Cylons, and it is breathtaking. It's fantastic. It's not fun, but I will say that you will sit there gasping."
The depths of these revelations might even force some revisiting on the part of viewers. "Basically, you will go back to see the series again," Olmos said. "I couldn't have imagined this kind of a situation happening at the end of a show, where you would actually start at the beginning. That's a masterful piece of understanding, Ron [Moore]. Genius. Because after you see The Plan, you'll want to go back and view the whole series again."
The Plan will air on SciFi (or is that SyFy?) this fall, with a director's cut DVD release to follow shortly after.
