It’s been 10 years since Scott Bondy garnered countless Kurt Cobain comparisons as frontman of the rock band Verbena. “I used to just
spit out whatever was going on at the time
without really caring about anything as
much as getting it done,” says the
36-year-old songwriter, who now goes by AA Bondy and
writes sentimental folk songs. "I don't know that any of the songs back then made sense."
His recent songs, though, make perfect sense with their strummy guitars, imperfect vocals and old-school lyrics full of Biblical imagery. Writing them alone has cleared Bondy's head. "You tend learn a lot of things by playing with bands," he says, "but you also learn that it's very messy playing with other people. Bands can turn into really sick families."
Bondy's gone so solo that he dosen't even know who's going to play behind him at Sasquatch! and Bonnaroo this year. "I'll start by making calls to all the people I know," he says. We hope that list includes his wife's siblings—country-folk hotshots The Felice Brothers.

"Writing them along"? I think you mean "alone". Jeez, even Paste online could use more editors.
Thanks for the typo catch, sylviaplath! It's correct in the magazine. Just got messed up in the transition to web. Fixed now.
