There's a lot to look forward to this summer in the way of Woodstock commemoration. Packed into one historic week in August, there's Ang Lee's comedy Taking Woodstock, the Heroes of Woodstock anniversary concert in Bethel, N.Y., and now, for the completists/purists, a six-CD boxed set of Woodstock recordings, featuring 38 previously unreleased tracks.
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, Rhino Records will release Woodstock-40 Years On: Back to Yasgur's Farm, a 77-song boxed set with music in chronological order, featuring The Grateful Dead, The Who, Jefferson Airplane and more. Producers of the boxed set pride themselves on having stuck to the original setlists after listening to all of 33 sets of multitrack tapes from the concert.
"The way we approached all the material was as if it was a cinema verité documentary--the raw record of the event," co-producer Andy Zax said in a statement. The producers also included extra details like the sound of rain falling that would lead to legendary mud and the full speech Max Yasgur made to the audience, never before released in its entirety.
The set drops Aug. 18, with a retail list price of $79.98.
