Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland Photos, Details Released

Take the childhood-favorite tale Alice in Wonderland. Add the twisted triumvirate of Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter to the movie re-imagination. Throw in a plotline that's tinged with a little dose of girl power. Then release some of the set photos online through USA Today way out in front of the release date of March 5, 2010. The result?

Insane anticipation. And drool. Judging from the exclusive set photos released on USA Today's website, the Burton reckoning of the Lewis Carroll novel might be his most gorgeous film yet. Sun and shadows mix to highlight scenes filled with towering mushrooms, flowers with forlorn human faces and crafty animal-shaped shrubbery. The signature gothic touch that Burton delivers to all his films is evident even in the stills.

Details about characters have rolled out as well, with producer Richard Zanuck describing Depp's Mad Hatter character as "off his rocker" with an "indescribable" accent. In other news, Bonham Carter's Red Queen flaunts an appropriately CGI-bloated head, Anne Hathaway's White Queen floats around instead of walking, and Beauty and the Beast writer Linda Woolverton is said to be giving the tale a modern feminist edge. Sounds like both a feast for the eyes and the mind.
