Tom Russell and Calexico Team Up for New Album

June 18, 2009  |  8:00am
Veteran Texas singer-songwriter Tom Russell has collaborated with the members of Calexico on the latest in an already formidable discography, Blood and Candle Smoke, coming Sept. 15 on Shout! Factory.

Russell was first struck by Calexico’s work backing a few Bob Dylan covers on the soundtrack to Todd Haynes’ biopic, I’m Not There. “I thought, how great is that—you’ve got a new kind of world/mariachi sound but the great writing of Bob Dylan,” Russell wrote in a recent statement. Some investigation into the band’s work led him to discover Wave Lab Studios in Tucson, Ariz., owned by Craig Schumaker (Neko Case, Iron & Wine, Calexico).  Russell headed to Tucson, and two weeks of recording live at Wave Lab with Calexico members Joey Burns, John Convertino and Jacob Valenzuela resulted in Blood and Candle Smoke.

Twenty five years after the release of his debut, Heart on a Sleeve, this new offering comes richly influenced by Russell’s own life experiences, rife with literary references and odes to fellow musicians. It fits easily in the canon of American folk, where Russell bears the torch handed to him by so many of his influences—Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, and Bruce Springsteen.

Russell will follow the album release with an extensive tour throughout the United States.
