Beastie Boy Adam Yauch Diagnosed with Cancer; Group Cancels Tour, Postpones Album

Unfortunate news arrived this morning from legendary New York-based rap trio, Beastie Boys, namely that band member Adam Yauch (MCA) has a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. The tumor was detected early and localized in a single area, so hopes are high for effective treatment. Thankfully, the tumor is not located where it might affect Yauch's vocal chords.

Yauch will have to undergo surgery and several weeks of treatment. As such, the Beasties, who recently headlined Bonnaroo alongside Bruce Springsteen, Snoop Dogg and Nine Inch Nails, have cancelled all upcoming live shows. They've also postponed the release of their next album, Hot Sauce Committee Part 1.

In a video statement viewable on the band's website, Yauch made the following statement (paraphrased): "I just need to take a little time to get this in check, and then we'll release the record and play some shows. It's a pain in the neck (sorry, had to say it) because I was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later."

The band's label, EMI, made the following statement: "Our thoughts, love and prayers are with Adam Yauch, his family and the Beastie Boys. The most important thing is to allow Adam to focus on staying healthy. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery."
