It's summertime, and the traditional concert hall just won't do. We want to be somewhere else. Somewhere where we can welcome a breeze, rub elbows beneath a hot sun or watch fireflies add to the light show at dusk. JellyNYC kicked off the first of a series of pool party concerts in Brooklyn this past weekend, while Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp are on the Northeast leg of their tour through America's ballparks. And somewhere further west, Daytrotter's Sean Moeller has dreamed up a truly American summer experience: the barn concert.
That's right. In a bold stroke of music altruism, Moeller has topped his daily efforts to bring music to the people by launching the Daytrotter Barnstorming Tour, a five-day jaunt through the Midwest
in which six bands will play free shows in barns volunteered by Midwestern natives. In a statement to The Des Moines Register,
Moeller said that the intention of the tour is to
bring great music to small American towns that are not usually on musicians'
radars as they plan their cross-country tours. Moeller, who lives in Davenport, Iowa, just a skip across the Mississippi from his recording studio in Rock Island, Ill., has been releasing information about the tour on Daytrotter's Twitter.
The Barnstorming Tour will feature Local Natives, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Catfish Haven, Snowblink, Paleo and Mac Lethal. Five shows have been announced; four will take place in barns and one will take place in the attic of a home in Madison, Wisc. Barn concert attendees should RSVP via email to recieve the exact address of each intimate show.
