Hometown: London
Album: Bone of My Bones (fall 2009)
For Fans Of: X-Ray Specs, David Bowie, Janelle Monáe
“I’m so bloody bored of seeing indie boys in skinny jeans, black T-shirts and guitars,” laments British TV-actress-turned-bizarro-songstress Ebony Bones. “Trying hard not to try hard has, ironically, become a uniform.” Which is why Ebony takes the opposite approach: She personally designs her band’s riotous stage costumes—all neon tribal prints and Spandex. From the danceable paranoia of “We Know All About U” to the giddy ruckus of “The Muzik,” her blend of psycho-tropic spacepunk and crunchy pop seems as effortless as lifting one of her lemon-yellow-vinyl-nailed pinkie fingers.
What’s Next? Her debut, Bone of My Bones, will drop sometime in late 2009 on a label still to be determined. “This album is about audacity—having the audacity to step outside the circumferences of what you’ve been expected to be in life,” the 25-year-old Ebony says. “Chances are, I’ll only have this audacity while I’m young, so I might as well use it.”
