Best of What's Next 2009: Frightened Rabbit [Musicians]

Hometown: Selkirk, Scotland
Album: The Midnight Organ Fight
Band Members: Grant Hutchison (drums), Scott Hutchison (guitar, vocals), Billy Kennedy (guitars, keyboards, bass), Andy Monaghan (guitars, keyboards, bass)
For Fans Of: The Mountain Goats, The Long Winters, Counting Crows

Originally the solo project of frontman Scott Hutchison, Frightened Rabbit is now a four-piece with a pair of studio records, plus a live album out earlier this year. The band’s songs have the same emotional tug as early Counting Crows, but with the added bonus of Hutchison’s lovely brogue and palpable misery.

What’s Next? The band will head back into the studio after its current U.S. tour. Beyond that? “I’ve been really, really keen to do a duet of [Elton John and Kiki Dee’s] ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,’ but with another guy,” Scott says. “Craig Finn or James Graham from The Twilight Sad would be an ideal Kiki. Both total hotties. I truly admire and love The Hold Steady, and would if I ever get to that point, I should think life would truly be in line, or as close as it ever will be.”
